Saitz In Mustang Wins ODR at Super Chevy, Micke Wins OTF

Gateway Motorsports Park hosted the Super Chevy Show over the weekend and highlighting the show were the 10.5 Outlaw and Outlaw Drag Radial classes. Former Pro Modified competitor and ProCharger ace, Mark Micke took the win in the Outlaw 10.5 class by defeating Mark Woodruff’s classic ’67 Corvette in the final round. St. Louis native and another former Pro Modified competitor, Dan Saitz of Hyperformance Motorsports fame took the win in the Outlaw Drag Radial class by defeating Junior Surface.

Mike Kimmis hurt the motor in his Trans-Am in qualifying, but was able to get it put back together for competition.

Lebanon, Mo., resident Mike Kimmis took his 2002 Firebird to the top spot in qualifying of the Outlaw 10.5 class with a 4.41-second elapsed time at 172 mph by figuring out his combination the best in tricky conditions fighting a very high-temperature track surface all weekend long. Kimmis paid the price though, as he damaged the motor on Saturday night and was forced to patch the motor back together for eliminations on Saturday. Steve George qualified a close second with a 4.46 at 161 mph, with Micke fourth and Scott Lowery, famous for his Cadillac XLR, in the fifth position.

Saitz took the top spot in ODR competition, posting a 5.12-second pass with Kevin Giblin qualifying his ’69 Yenko Nova in the second spot. Corey Stephens played the spoiler role, taking his X275 legal Mustang, including just a 275 radial on his car, to the fifth position with a 5.44-second pass.  The Nos. 3 through 8 qualifiers in Drag Radial posted times of 5.436 to 5.489.

In eliminations of OTF Woodruff knoked out Tim Barth first round with a 4.67-second time at 166 mph. Richard Starfford’s ’67 Camaro advanced past Tim Slaven’s 2000 Camaro when Slavens struggled with traction, and Josh Long’s blown ’68 Camaro put Kurt Fiffel’s ’66 Chevelle on the trailer. Long captured the only round one upset in OTF. In round one of ODR, Stephens made the quickest run of the round as his 5.464 effort tied that of Travis Gone while other racer struggled with a track temp of over 120 degrees.

Round two got tougher as the track temperature soared to over 140 degrees. Kimmis kept limping his Trans-Am down the track to take the win with a 4.72 over Strafford. Woodruff ran a 4.77 to knock out Todd Kitchen’s ’91 Firebird while Josh Long took out George, who blew the tires off immediately at the hit. Micke got the bye as Scott Lowery’s XLR suffered damage in the first round. Junior Surface and Travis Gone both posted respectable 5.4 second passes to advance to the semi-finals while Saitz slowed to a 5.67 to defeat Jim Williams and Phillip Reichardt won a pedal fest over Eric Luig.

Kimmis’ motor finally gave way in the semi-final, allowing Micke to advance with a 4.62 while Kimmis posted a 5.55 at 110 mph. Woodruff knocked out Long with a 4.75 at 162 to a slowing 4.95 by Long. Saitz fund his stride again in ODR, posting a 5.20 at 143 mph while Gord spun down track and slowed to a 5.63. Surface ran a 5.32 at 135 to take out Reichart, who spun early.

The final round of OTF saw Micke and Woodruff line up. At the flash of the ambers the cars were side-by-side to the 330-foot markers with a 3.13 for Micke to Woodruffs 3.15. From there, Micke stretched his lead as Woodruffs Corvette spun the tires and Micke rolled to a winning 4.61.

It was Tydo Race Cars versus Hyperformance Motorsports in the final round of ODR, with Saitz representing his own company and Surface representing Tydo. The final was over early as Surface spun the tires and Saitz blasted his Mustang to a 5.15 at 144 mph to capture the win.
