Chrysler 200 Makes Debut As Mopar Takes Over Cobo Hall

mopar-17Back in 2009 Chrysler was the worst-off of the Detroit Three, suffering from poor sales and an unreliable, low-quality lineup of cars that underwhelmed at every turn. Flash forward to today though, at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, and you’ll find that Chrysler has taken a huge stride in the right direction with the all-new Chrysler 200 midsize sedan.

mopar-12This is a hugely important car to Chrysler, and you can tell with the level of detail they put into it. Replacing the ancient Sebring-turned-200 sedan, which was improved upon in its later years only thanks to an amazingly low standard Chrysler itself set, the all-new Chrysler 200 is loaded with innovation, from the transmission dial (rather than stick shifter) and pass-through storage to striking exterior that stands by the principles of both form and function.

Based on the same Alfa Romeo wide-compact chassis as the Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee, the 2015 Chrysler 200 is loaded with enough luxury and gadgetry to make even Bruce Wayne jealous. In addition to employing LED headlights and taillights, the Chrysler 200 gets an innovative all-wheel drive option that can completely disconnect the rear wheels, improving fuel economy dramatically. Two engine options will be available at launch, the 184 horsepower 2.4 liter Tigershark four-cylinder, and the 3.6 liter, 295 horsepower Pentastar V6.

The exterior design, meanwhile, is meant to evoke the feel of a four-door coupe, and engineers worked hard to sculpt a very aerodynamic body. In fact, with a drag coefficient of just 0.27, the 2015 Chrysler 200 is as aerodynamic as many high-MPG hybrids, though Chrysler is remaining tight-lipped on actual fuel economy numbers for now. From the sounds of it though, expect the Chrysler 200 to be somewhere in the mid-30s for highway fuel economy.

mopar-20The interior is where the Chrysler 200 really shines though. The Chrysler 200 S is the base model, while the 200C brings things to the next-level of sexy with plush leather seats and an 8.1-inch LCD screen hooked to Chrysler’s UConnect system. By eliminating the standard stick shifter with a dial, Chrysler was also able to develop a cool pass-through storage cubby accessible from either the driver or passenger’s side. The 2015 Chrysler 200 a competitor to look out for in the coming year, as the midsize car segment suddenly has some serious competition that pushes quality and luxury to the next level.

But while the Chrysler 200 was the big debut (booo, no Hellcat HEMI), the Pentastar brand went beyond just a simple new car reveal. Taking over a massive chunk of Cobo Hall with their Mopar Custom Garage display, Chrysler took a moment to show us the versatility of the Mopar line of parts. In addition to displaying some of the new Elephant HEMI 50th anniversary merchandise, Moparized representatives of the entire Chrysler lineup (including the new 200 sedan) were on hand, with a plethora of parts designed to let your creativity burst forth.

While the four-door arctic camouflage Wrangler was hard to ignore, and the green-skinned Viper was definitely a show-stealer, we found ourselves spending a lot of time circling the 2015 200, inside and out. Maybe it was just the newness of it all, or maybe it was the “Imported from Detroit” embossed white leather seats, but we can’t get enough of this car.

The 2014 Challenger Mopar concept was also on hand, as were plenty of Chargers, Challengers, and Darts of various variants, along with some sexy booth professionals who only make these muscle machines all the more endearing. Just prior to the show, Chrysler debuted the Dodge Dart Blacktop, which joins the Charger, Challenger, and Caravan among others as gaining some sexy black accents inside and out. Unfortunately, the rumored Hellcat HEMI was nowhere to be seen, and most likely won’t be revealed until the Mopar Spring Fest in March.

The Mopar booth had by far the most American muscle on tap, even with a sprinkling of Fiats here and there. The Imported from Detroit brand certainly made a big splash at the Detroit Auto Show, and we can’t wait to see what’s on tap next.
