Our weekend here at The Mopars at The Strip has proved a limitless well of great experiences and once-in-a-lifetime chances. We were lucky enough to meet and talk with one of the Ramchargers, Dr. Dave Rockwell.
Needing very little introduction, the factory Dodge race team, The Ramchargers, were instrumental in providing Chrysler invaluable testing data as well as setting the racing world on fire with world record after world record, including the first 9-second pass.
Dave was the Cinderella story of the Ramchargers, starting off as just a kid who followed those early years and worked his way onto the team, first as just an assistant and then as a major member of the crew, finally becoming an official “Ramcharger.”
From 1963 all the way to 1978, Dave worked side by side with Tom Hoover, Hartford Buckel, Tom Coddington, Dick Jones, Dan Mancini, Dick Maxwell, Pete McNicholl, and Jim “B.B.” Thornton. Recently, Dave – together with the surviving members of the original Ramchargers – put together a full-color documentary coffee table book titled, “We Were The Ramchargers.” Taking nearly 10 years, the book is a great compilation of private photographs and personal accounts.
