Dominick Farbo’s “Blizzard” Mustang Is One Car That Keeps It Cool

blizzardleadartThere is one unifying factor for all the oil in the veins of gearheads out there that is passion. When you apply that passion to a vision and a quality build team, that is when truly special projects are born.

From a distance, this Mustang just looks nice and has a great stance.

One of those projects is Dominick Farbo’s 1965 Mustang “Blizzard” built by the Ring Brothers. This fastback is equal parts family hot rodding love, old school looks, with high level new school building techniques that, when mixed together, create a recipe for pony car perfection that runs as good as it looks.

The obsession for all things automotive began at a young age for Farbo, “I went to a vocational school for auto mechanics, took a job as a mechanic at 17, and turned wrenches until I was 23,” he said. After years of turning wrenches, Farbo started selling them as a Snap On dealer and eventually worked his way up to being a district manager for the company. He is now the Service Director for West Herr Auto Group at Toyota. All of these experiences helped to set the path towards The Ring Brothers and planted the seeds for the Blizzard Mustang.

As you get closer to Blizzard, you start to see that something is a bit different… and better.

Over the years Farbo has owned some pretty amazing cars that included a 1970 Ford Torino GT, a 1964 Pro Street Thunderbolt, and totally radical 1941 Willy’s coupe that rocked an aluminum 526 cubic inch Hemi that made 1,000 hp at the tires. The Willy’s was the string that tied Farbo to the Ring Brothers, as they met while Farbo was showing the car in Buffalo, and showed the bond between Farbo, his family, and cars.

“We met the Rings at a Buffalo car show as I was showing my Willy’s; I have twin girls, and they were about 8 at the time. The Rings had some blow up BASF parrots and the girls wanted some. They were so nice to the girls and easy to talk to.” It was that encounter and comfort level that would make the choice easy to use the Ring Brothers for Farbo. Soon after the show a gentleman from New Jersey showed up at Farbo’s doorstep, made him an offer he could not refuse on the Willy’s, and just like that the Willy’s was gone.

In search of advice, Farbo reached out to the Ring Brothers for ideas on what to do on his next project. After some conversations and exchanges of ideas Farbo commissioned project Blizzard to begin. The level of confidence in the Ring Brothers is apparent when Farbo speaks about his experience.

They are one of a kind to work with, and when you are on a budget, you really appreciate the honesty. -Dominick Farbo

“They are one of a kind to work with, and when you are on a budget, you really appreciate the honesty. They built me a great car, stayed true to our deal, and now are our close friends,” Farbo said.

The end product of the collaboration with the Ring Brothers and Farbo is a Mustang that adds a new dimension of what can be accomplished with a muscle car. From 20 yards away the majestic white paint pops, the stance looks great, and the package looks amazing as a whole. But as you get closer the details begin to shine bright. From front to back this car was designed and built to look good sitting still or going fast, because this pony will run when you dig the spurs in.

Farbo admits he is a drag racer at heart, but then gives some background on part of the design. “The car was built for Autocross since it is required by Goodguys for any major award. In Indy we were the fastest in class, at Columbus we were second fastest of all Street Machine cars,” he said.

IMG_0289The autocross goal was not achieved by accident, the Ring Brothers put some serious performance parts in the Mustang to make it handle like it’s on rails and put big, reliable power under the hood.

The Ring Brothers started with a donor firewall, floor, and roof that was laying around the shop and went to work. Starting with the not-so-subtle body changes, the hood, roof, trunk, quarter window inserts, doors and rear bumper have all been constructed with carbon fiber. Not stopping there with creating a custom body, the nose was all remade using hand rolled aluminum and had Harley Davidson added as a nod to Farbo’s past work with the iconic motorcycle manufacture.

The carbon fiber details make this Mustang really stand out.

If you are going to have a car that looks this good with a goal of autocross domination you better have some serious rip, and the Ring Brothers dialed up the power in a big way. Keeping with the old school feel, a NASCAR Wegner Automotive 351-based 427cid V8 brings the roar and is backed by a Bowler Performance 5-Speed that Farbo rows as he carves up the cones. There are no fancy electronics to be found in the Blizzard under the hood – just tire melting power.

IMG_1798Making big power is boat loads of fun, but if you want to lay down fast times in autocross you’d better have a car that can handle. To help the Mustang realize that goal Detroit Speed and Engineering was brought on board for the build. A complete handling package from DSE that includes coilovers at all 4 corners and a Quadralink rear end sit under the car and are tied together with a Ring Brothers custom roll cage.

Bringing the Blizzard to a halt is a Baer braking system with 15-inch disk brakes up front and 14-inch in the rear that get the claps put down by some massive 6-piston calipers. Wrapped around the brakes are exquisite HRE 560R wheels that wear Nitto Invo to keep the Mustang planted around the autocross course.

A great wheel and tire package helps the stance really pop on Farbo's ride

Rounding out the Mustang is an interior to die for from Upholstery Unlimited. The Recaro racing seats keep him planted around the autocross, and the easy-to-read Classic Instruments keep a tab on engine vitals. As Farbo rolls down the road, the Alpine stereo system mixed with the exhaust tone from the Wegner power plant keep his ears happy.

The attention to detail continues inside Blizzard

Even with the car complete, a Top 5 Goodguys Street Machine of the year award in hand, and Muscle Machine of The Year nomination under his belt, Farbo remembers what is most important: family. He said, “I would like to thank my wife Becky, my girls Ellery and Mackenzie. I love that my family is part of this as well as the people you meet along the way during this process.”

The Ring Brothers and Farbo have really taken the spirit of an American classic and elevated it to a new level. The Blizzard is the type of Mustang that many of us build in our minds, no matter our age.  Mixing an old school look and spicing it up with some serious real world performance is what makes this car so special. Dominick Farbo and The Ring Brothers have created a masterpiece of wide out performance that will give any car lover chills.
