SEMA 2014: McLeod Racing Reveals New Muscle Car 5-Speed and More

IMG_0785SEMA

At this year’s SEMA show, McLeod Racing had some new hardware that will be of interest to both domestic and import fans. On the domestic side, muscle car owners who want an overdrive manual transmission, but who aren’t thrilled about the prospect of cutting up their car’s transmission tunnel to make one fit will appreciate McLeod’s Muscle Car 5 gearbox. With a much smaller case size than other 5-speed transmissions, it won’t require invasive surgery to fit most applications, but it is still stout enough to endure 500 pound-feet of torque.

Muscle Car 5 Gear Ratios:

  • 1st: 2.95
  • 2nd: 1.99
  • 3rd: 1.34
  • 4th: 1:00
  • 5th: 0.63

The transmission features a 1 1/8-inch, 26 spline input, and accepts a 32 spline Turbo 400 style output yoke. The transmission is fully synchronized and uses durable 8620 forged steel gears.

Another outstanding new product is McLeod’s aluminum SFI bellhousing. Yes, that’s right – aluminum. Tipping the scales at a scant 13.5 pounds, this spun-and-CNC’ed housing incorporates a steel liner ring, and features an interchangeable transmission plate.

McLeod Fun Fact:

The company name was actually selected by founder Red Roberts out of a phone book – he was looking for something unusual but easy to remember, and the last name McLeod stuck out to him.

With bolt patterns available for both traditional small-block Chevy and LS engines, they come in two versions – a race bellhousing complete with block plate that carries SFI 6.1 approval, and a street version that comes sans-plate for those who want lightweight strength and safety, but don’t need the SFI sticker.

Finally, we got a sneak peek at McLeod’s “Supremacy” clutch line, due out in early 2015. This line will cater to sport compact and European applications, with complete kits that provide McLeod’s signature quality at affordable prices. Multiple levels of torque capacity will be offered, for both street and racing use.
