Gallery: Cool Rods, Clean Threads & Close Shaves

We’re sure all you gearheads out there have had to make choices on how to spend your well-earned Saturday afternoons. You need a haircut, new clothes and a blue dot taillight for your rod, and you just don’t have the time to drive all around town before the big car show, so what do you do?

Well don’t fret all you dudes and dudettes; we have the answer for you. In the big little city of San Jacinto, California, there is an indoor mall called Farmer’s Corner, and in that mall you will find some of the usual shops like a women’s dress store, beauty shop, watch repair, and so on.

But what you probably won’t expect is a hardcore vintage car parts store named Grump’s Garage selling not only vintage parts, but cool t-shirts, and one of the most complete collections of rockabilly, psychobilly, and Country Western CD’s and DVD’s you’ve ever seen. Owner Mark Carrillo tells us, “Yes sir. if we don’t have it, you don’t need it.”

But, what about your hair? Who is going to give you that sought after high and tight with wings that you like to rock at the Hootenanny or the Primer nationals? Danny from The Gentleman’s Barbershop that’s who.

And what about some new clothes? Next door is Trucha, specializing in Dickies, Queen 395, Pendleton shirts, Ben Davis, Lucky 13, Trophy Queen, and many other brands for guys and girls. Mimi and Anthony Rodriguez own this car-themed clothing store, and from what we are told, there is no other place in California that offers all three services of this kind in close proximity.

So we took the short trip to San Jacinto to check out this dream come true and you guessed it, it was all there. We met with Mark, Danny, Anthony and his wife Mimi and they gave us the grand tour.

Mark Carrillo owner of Grump’s explained that Grump’s Garage is a one-stop-shop for any vintage automotive part for your rat rod or street rod from 1928 to 1956. He specializes in vintage Ford but has access to most anything that you might need.

His shop also has an extensive collection of rockabilly, psychobilly, blues and traditional country music. We were mesmerized by all the cool vintage car culture DVD’s and CD’s that was in stock. Talk about a big boy toy store! Everywhere we turned we found something we thought we had to have. Lucky for us, we knew our limitations.

After we wandered out of Grump’s, we walked right into Trucha, a clothing store dedicated to the car enthusiast. Owners Anthony and wife Mimi, carry all the brands that are car cultured oriented. Anthony, being a car dude himself, got tired of driving around to different stores to find those certain car culture branded clothes so he and his wife opened up the shop.

Anthony told us, “You can find everything here, cool clothes, shoes, hats, for men and women, and accessories for women like purses, hair accessories and jewelry.” The store is growing in inventory and is expanding every month. I know where I’m going for my next pair of Dickies and black t-shirt.

For you hardcore car dudes that want that traditional style haircut and shave, The Gentleman’s Parlor is right next door. It was like walking back in time. The smell of hair tonic and powder was in the air. As we walked around the shop admiring all the vintage die-cast toys and car memorabilia, the phone rang in the shop and Danny answers a throw-back 1940’s style flat black rotary dial phone. Yeah you read right, a rotary dial up phone. How cool is that?

We watched as Danny and his skilled barbers Curtis and Aaron clipped hair and used actual straight razors to give customers that ultra close shave that you can’t get with an electric razor. As we were watching the action, Danny offered us an ice cold can of Schlitz, he had a whole fridge full of the stuff. Danny tells us he orders it by the case for his special customers. So while you’re waiting for a cut, you can drink a cold one and read the latest rat rod mag.

What do all these guys have in common other than having businesses within spitting distance of each other? They are all car dudes. When closing time comes around, these guys are wrenching on cars and hittin’ the car shows. They don’t just sell it, they live it.

Danny’s shop hauler is a ’60’s Ford Econoline van that he uses as a daily driver. Mark cruises the streets in his vintage ’29 chopped and lowered Ford truck and Anthony has had some classic low riders with a couple Harleys to boot.

So the next time you’re in San Jacinto, stop by the Farmer’s Corner. Get a haircut and shave, buy your best girl a black tank top, pick up some car parts and buy some drivin’ music for the way home.
