June seventh was the Heads Up Madness at Sunshine Dragstrip in Clearwater Florida. I was there doing the usual thing covering the race and I have to tell you it was just really hot. Now I know this is Florida and June so that’s to be expected, but what wasn’t expected was the performance of some of the cars on a 150 degree track !! Can you say 4.90’s on a drag radial ? Both Troy Pirez and Will Stevenson were running in the 4.9x range during qualifying only to have the race called due to a computer crash after first round eliminations of 10.5.





Will Stevenson runs a procharged big block chevy blow through set up on gas, and surely has the power to get the job done if they can get the consistency necessary to go rounds.



Team Pirez also runs a big block chevy, though has run nitrous for years with great results and now has Steve Johnsons Induction Solutions on board. They have won the last three stock suspension races at Sunshine.



Another Player in Drag Radial is Alex Vrettos who runs the Real Street series at Maryland International Raceway. He recently set the radial tire ET record at 7.38, surpassing David Wolfe (7.40) and Shannon Wren ( 7.41) though Wren still has the MPH being the only car to pass 200, with three 200 MPH runs in a row earlier this year at the Memphis Mid-south Shootout.

I had the chance for a short interview with Troy Pirez Jr while we were waiting for the race to be called, watch him call out everyone...seriously.
