NEWS FROM THE PITS ROUND THREE BRADENTON
Hicksville NewYork resident Vinny Budano is here in Bradenton Florida for the NMCA season opener to defend his Pro Street title yet again after winning the championship for the past three years. He is qualified in the number two spot with a 6.42 @ 219, just three hundredths behind Indiana's Tony Bischoff. Vinny runs Scott Shafiroff engines with three stages of Speedtech nitrous in his 1968 Camaro. He says it takes over 2500 horsepower to push the 2750 pound ride to over 220 MPH in the quater mile.
The Budano crew has been racing together with the same members for many years
Troy Pirez Jr. ran an 8.32 for a new personal best in the third round qualifying session after having some eletrical problems earlier in the day and detuning the car trying to avoid tire shake. Troy Jr. and his father do their own engines and are spraying about 400 HP of nitrous on the big block chevy.
This car was campaigned for several years by his father in various organzations depending on where it best fit the rules and is well known in the radial tire classes for being a top contender. Though not purpose built for this class like other cars in Xtreme Street this father and son team is quite satisfied with the performance this weekend.
Phil "Tookie" Swales is another Florida racer and he races his 1970 Nova in Nostalgia Pro Street. The North Port resident picked up his car from Dan Nuemans chassis shop just Thursday after some adjustments in an effort to stop a persistant wheelie problem and new engine instalation. This piece was done in Rob Adlers A Team Speed Shop in Illinois. The first pass on the car this weekend was an 8.32 @ 163. The Nova is an old school car being a traditional back half chassis, still having the stock front clip installed and being 400 pounds overweight for this class.
Kenny Voss is unique in the Pro Street field with a natrually aspirated 818 Schmidt motor in the 2006 Chevy Cavalier. Kenny is based in Homosassa Florida and plans to run the NMCA season for 2008. Cal Mathewson is the car owner and sponser with his Xtreme Cycle Works business.
They tore up a clutch earlier but are back in business now. They sit on the bump so they'll need some luck to make it through Sunday.
