Andy Schmidt has been racing NMRA’s Edelbrock Hot Street the last few years with the help of his brother and his dad. In 2007 they finished 6th in the points. This year they decided to take on all brands and race in NMCA’s Comp Cams Pro Stock class.
At the first race in Florida Andy qualified 6th with his Bischoff Engine Service powerplant and was matched up against number 1 qualifier Butch Kemp. When the car left it went up in a wheel stand and when it came back down it hit the oil pan. The oil pan split and oil drenched the track and covered the tires with oil. Andy did his best to keep it off the wall but to no avail. The car smacked the wall with the right side of the car and they were done for the weekend.
The Schmidt’s amazingly got the car repaired in time for the NMCA Bowling green race. They qualified 10th out of 11 cars with an 8.89 at 160.02 mph. In the first round of eliminations Andy out ran Skip Baskin’s 2002 Camaro by .009 of second with an 8.702. The second round paired him against Bruce Maichle in his 2002 Trans Am. Bruce was the number 2 qualifier and the Comp Cams Pro Stock champion from 2007. But Bruce was unable to make the call and Andy made a single with his quickest time of the weekend an 8.692.
With the win in round two he earned a bye run to the finals. Andy did not take it easy on this run! He stepped it up with an 8.624 for his fastest pass of the weekend. In the finals he was up against Jeff Chandler in a Chevy powered Mustang. Andy cut a 0.015 light and out ran Jeff with an 8.658 at 157.17 to Jeff’s 8.707 at 156.7.
We give give props to the Schmidt crew for not only repairing the damage but earning their first ever NMCA Pro Stock victory in 2008! Below you can see an embedded video of the NMCA Finals where Andy won:
