Conrad Grunewald’s C5 Corvette Drift Car

Representing the home team USA in the 2009 Formula Drift series, Conrad Grunewald’s Bowling Green, Kentucky built Corvette goes toe-to-toe with some of the best that the land of the rising sun has to offer. We profiled and video taped this car for some Nitto videos last year - and we can tell you, not only does it look radical, but it performs.

Grunewald’s Corvette has a Magnacharged 427 LS6 based small block that makes over 600 horsepower and 545 ft. lbs. of torque to the Nitto rear tires. The blower is only running 3-4 lbs of boost, so the supercharger is safe and reliable, even when Conrad pegs the throttle at the track.

For suspension, it has Penske Racing 8700 Series adjustable coil-overs with Swift Engineering springs on all 4 corners. The steering angle has been modified to deal with the extreme steering required on a drift course. The factory traverse leaf springs have been replaced with a coil over rear suspension. The car features factory Z06 brakes with the rear brake system updated to work with a hydraulic rear hand brake lever. Technosquare in Torrance, California helped build the car and are top notch tuners who have extensive experience in drifting and other forms of racing.

Watch the video below as Conrad hits the track in his bright red C5R.

Exterior updates include a C5R body kit, based off the Corvette's that ran in the American LeMans series and a competition GT rear wing. A cowl hood is required to clear the Magnacharger supercharger and makes the C5's aggressive look match its screaming V8 sound.

Nitto
supplies Conrad’s team with the Nitto Invo 295/35/ZR18 rear rubber needed to make it through six rounds of Formula D competition. Nitto Invo 235/35/ZR18 front tires steer this 3200 pound ship around the course. Conrad picked the Nitto Invo tire from Nitto's DOT legal lineup because of its Silica-reinforced tread compound, variable pitched grooves and large inner and outer contact patches.

Conrad's future plans include retiring the Corvette and entering a 2010 Camaro drift car in the Formula D series next year. Conrad was one of eight picked by GM to build a 2010 Camaro for the 2009 SEMA show. We anticipate the Camaro will be a big hit next year battling it out with the Mustangs, RX7's and 350Z's that populate the Formula D series.
