Money makes the world go round, but these days there doesn’t seem to be too much floating around, especially in the automotive world. Shit rolls down hill as they say, and while the Big Three are struggling to find cash flow, so are other car-related businesses such as suppliers, aftermarket parts makers, and even museums. The National Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, KY, put up for auction last week the very first 2008 model year Corvette for auction on eBay, which GM had donated to them. The winning bid for car number 00001 came in at $60,000, from the $45,000 opening bid last week. Proceeds from the auctions are going to support the non-profit National Corvette Museum, which is located across the street from the factory where Corvettes have been manufactured since 1981.
The Velocity Yellow Coupe was part of GM’s Show Car Division, essentially a supermodel on wheels where it was used at all sorts of Corvette shows and displays, racking up just 977 miles since rolling off the assembly line. While this is hardly the most historic Corvette ever constructed, it is still an important part of ‘Vette history and features many mid-cycle upgrades over the original C6, including the 6.2 liter 430 horsepower LS3 V8. Additionally, the car comes packed with just about every option, including the desirable 4LT custom wrapped leather interior. A Bose sound system, OnStar, XM satellite radio, a Heads Up Display, and the F55 Magnetic Selective Ride Control system, which uses a computer controlled fluid damper system to minimize body roll, bouncing, and noise.
