The shop dogs have been busy prepping for the next Victorville Auto Raceway (VAR) street stock race. It's been a busy week with all the changes we've made to the car. Although our Rookie driver ran a clean race, and there was minimal race damage to repair, there was some changes we wanted to make for safety and performance.
1st task: Change the radiator after our driver boiled the old one and the pit crew dumped cold water in it (cracked a couple of cooling tubes). Normally they would have waited to put the cold water in an empty hot radiator but our driver had made the "b" main event and there was only 15 minutes to staging.
2nd task: Change the ball joints. I'm pretty sure that they were sloppy because of normal wear and not our Rookie driver's hot driving. In any case, the old ball joints were worn and needed replaced.
3rd task: Put some new rubber on the rims. The car came with some pretty sun damaged and race damaged rubber. After a little research we decided that the Cooper Cobra G/Ts were the way to go.
4th task: Put in some redneck engineering. Because we were running a little warm last race, we wanted to introduce the engine to some good ole fashioned redneck engineering to the thermostat.
5th task: Mufflers. The existing mufflers had seen better days. Some DynoMax flow through bullet style mufflers were our first choice. Adds some power and sounds mean.
Rookie driver checking out his car:
We finished up by adding some more paint to the car for our aesthetic/cosmetic minded Rookie driver.
You can rest assured, if we did all this and more after a top ten finish......how much we will have to do when we finish in the top five.
Sleeping in the doghouse tonight. Got a race in two days.
