Florida Real Street Mid Season Rules Release

With just over a full year on the books in Real Street, it sure looks like the class is starting to draw a crowd. There were over twenty cars making the trip to SGMP for the May Outlaw Radial Tire Championships. The class began with discussions of Drag Radial getting out of hand and a need for some of the lower budget cars to race, then Mafia-Motorsports offered up a forum for the growing discussion. Some rules were put in place and Ralph Hestor, owner/manager at Immokalee Regional Raceway took a chance and let them play in December of 2007.

Mike Miller was an early top performer, though plagued by inconsistency and wheel stands. He races out of the Ford Speed camp, along with Clint Lonon.

Clint started out campaigning his blown modular powered SN95 Mustang, eventually switching to 440+ cubic inch power plant from BES Racing Engines with Edelbrock Victor heads and CHI manifold. After getting handle on the new power they ran down into the low 5.20’s, running the table at several events.

As expected some changes were coming in an effort to stop the dominance, weights were changed and the combination was hit with a jet restriction.

Enter Mike Burkhart and Walt Drakeford from Real Speed Racing. Mike has owned his car since new and has had Real Speed perform all the work and decisions on the car since 1999. After an incident with the guardrail at Sunshine during testing, Mike decided to step back and put Walt in the driver’s seat and the win streak began. They use a Bennett Racing 427 ci. engine with the TFS Hi Port heads. Charlie Pixley took over the driving for 2009, and though he has won the last three events he trails in the track points to Lonon, 154 to 134.

Aaron Gramer

There is a rules committee which is chaired by John Sears of OutlawRadial.net, the other members are Aaron Gramer, Eric Kenward, Randy Shearin and Joe Bonzack and the mid season adjustments were posted HERE on May 20th after a lengthy discussion. The newest revisions should allow for some closer racing and bring in some more cars to the class, which has been dominated by nitrous cars to date. Several potential racers were concerned the prior turbo rule would not allow competitive racing, though the lone turbo entry of Mike Fratena was clear he thought he could run near the top without the larger T-6 housing, it has been allowed with a 100 pound weight adder.

Troy Pirez Jr. Competes in the class with a BBC and the small jets and solinoid.

The next race for the Florida Real Street is June 6th at Sunshine Dragstrip. There are also some discussion underway to reconcile some difference with the 275 Nitrous Shootout races run in Virgina and Maryland and the Florida series to bring them together at the October ORTC race in Bradenton, perhaps in a quick 8 format Saturday night. The 275 radial classes have proven quite popular in the short time they have been running and should continue to grow at the local level.
