We stopped by the Keisler booth and had a chance to see some of the the latest transmission components they brought to the show. The big thing was the new Keisler-Pftizner Road & Track 6-Speed. This Dog Box based off the T56 is going to be sold as a kit that will include the correct clutch with it as well - ready to be swapped into your classic muscle car.
For those scratching their heads, a Dog Box refers to the type of engagement that a transmission uses. While typical gear boxes use synchros for smooth operation on the street, they are slow and not as durable compared to the dog gears. The Keisler-Pftizner Road & Track 6-Speed uses cogs on a slider instead of synchros. The shifter pushes them into a receiver ring, which engages the gear it is attached to. There is a separate dog and receiver for each gear in the transmission. This type of transmission is favorable to race cars as it lets the driver make quicker gear changes without having to fully use the clutch in between.
Making it work on the street was another story. This is accomplished with the use of helical gears versus straight cut versions. You also get TONS of billet components inside the case. From the cluster shaft and selectors, even the input shaft is billet.
