Saturday brought more heat and humidity but not much attrition. Surviving the day meant finding a way to keep cool.
Round 2 qualifying results
Elaine from Embry Riddle certainly made the HOT (and I mean HOT!) run of the day with her jet powered dragster pulling a 5.725 @ 264.
Jimmy Sugan Jr. brought out his Hooters sportsman car in an attempt to qualify in the Pro Street category, but simply couldn’t make his competition compete. He did have the best scenery though.
Tony Nesbitt and his crew needed Friday night to figure out how to get their leaner Vette down the track, so they could put up the best numbers of the day Saturday in the ridiculous heat. They still couldn’t edge out Spirro Pappas who put up a 6.903 @ 205 Friday night to Nesbitt’s 6.981 @ 203 Saturday.
Tony Bischoff has a hot 3rd qualifying round, when a back fire causes a small underhood fire. The mishap forced them to back it out and go to the pits, missing the last round. Having already qualified third, the heat probably would not have allowed a more competitive time anyway, but they did miss out on the chance at a test run to see just what the hot slick track could hold.
Atco is the marks the first running of the Late Model Shootout allowing all of these new motorcity muscle cars to face off. Hemi’s were well represented with a field chocked full of Magnums, Chargers and 300’s. Chad Taback posted an impressive 11.53 @ 117 to lead the Hemi’s. The matured late model Ford crowd was well represented and the quickly growing LSX group was being led by Paul Major who could not get the traction he needed to put up the times he’s capable of.
With a pretty smooth day most teams were doing a little routine maintenance, getting ready for first round eliminations on Sunday.
This guy certainly enjoys checking out the pair at the starting line.
