NMCA Florida 08 - Saturday Coverage
Saturday at NMCA Florida means qualifying is upon us. Temperature remained the same as we look towards three rounds of qualifying. We also will be bringing you the top news as the heads up cars run through today.

Team Budano is getting ready for qualifying Saturday morning, checking spring pressures and installing fresh plugs. They are currently running last years engine and plan a new bullet very soon. It's scary that they are planning on installing a fresh engine based on what did they with last year's power.

Bob Kurgen can do more than Ford's! As one of the leading tuners in the NMCA, he can always be asked to lend a hand. Here he puts a fresh tune what looks like Bob Curran's Xtreme Street Corvette. We're not totally sure but we'll make sure to feed you the cheese on this soon.

Florida racer Erik Kenward adjusts the MSD ignition in his Car Craft Street Race Malibu wagon. We brought you some killer pic's of Kenward's wagon yesterday. Rumor has it that he put the Malibu on the bumper in the last few weeks. Don't discount the ugly exterior, this thing is a total street racer and is built to rock.

Bill Trovato made the trip down to Florida bringing his Xtreme Street olds powerd Starfire for the NMCA kickoff here in Bradenton. Controversy has always seemed to follow the Starfire as it has previously run such an odd ball combination that none of the racers or even tech staff were up to speed yet on how to regulate it. But Trovato's been running great, even though we feel like we are in 1970 every time we check it out.

Frank Meshaw went bust with a weight reduction program over the winter break, installing a new fiberglass nose and doors. Apparently he hasn't gotten around to actually painting it yet. We've always said Meshaw had the potential to put a hurting on the Super Street class if we could get to wait and get the chassis sorted out. Will this be his year?

Bring you Round 1 Qualifying Class by Class notes shortly.

ARP Shootout Extreme Street
With the race "within a race" that is the ARP Extreme Street shootout, we've got 8 racers (the top from last year) competing for extra dough. This is being played out throughout qualifying rounds here at NMCA Florida.

In Round 1, your winners were Shemwell, Trovato, Bartholme, and Kurgan. Kurgan ran best of the round with a 8.16 followed by Trovato's 8.21.

1) Bob Kurgan 8.16 169.84
2) Bill Travato 8.21 170.55
3) Chuck Bartholme 8.22 167.94
4) Mike Keenan 8.28 167.53
5) Bart Tobener 8.34 164.56
6) Troy Pirez Jr 8.35 162.98
7) Nick Rinehart 8.38 160.88
8) Andy Mayes 8.40s 166.57
9) Steve Cagle 8.50 168.00
10) Mark Mahowksi 8.57 158.75
11) Aaron Stapleton 8.76 156.6
12) Danny Shemwell 8.87 171.36
13) Carlo Rumbolo 9.308 145.44
14) #4915 9.47 148.09
15) Henry Schneider 10.0 137.67
16) Haskell Mackowski 13.5 93.86

Hard to believe Coble and Curran on the outside of the 16 car field after Q1.

Butck Kemp playing with Pro Stock
NMCA Racer Butch Kemp has just destroyed the NMCA Pro Stock class in a single pass, and in the process, played with the field by lifting at 1,150 feet and still running a record munching 8.559 over 7 tenths under the 2007 record of 8.62 at only 143.76. You'd almost think he was Glidden out there popping the chute at 1,200 feet.

Taking advantage of the small block rules in place, Kemp has Chris Uratchko at URE Racing Engines build him a little 420ci CFE headed small block. Unless the big block boys step it up here we might be writing Kemp the championship before the end of the weekend.

Here is Butch's "toe lifting" pass for your review.

60': 1.246
1/8: 5.413
1/8 Mph: 127.600
1/4: 8.559
1/4 mph: 143.76

Recap of Round 1 Qualifying in Bradenton
The track personell did a fantastic job last night scraping the track till 9 PM and getting it in great condition for todays qualifying. Today looks to be off to a great start with partly cloudy skies and a light breeze. On Friday very few cars were able to make good hits, no problem there today with several cars on the bumper.

Car Craft Street Race competitor John Macaluso hooked hard on his first qualifying pass this morning, running a 9.23 in the process.

John Langer and Butch Kemp lined up in round one qualifying with Langer's Pontiac running an 8.62 to Kemps 8.55 in a tight race.

Troy Pirez Jr has a nice 8.35 @ 162 with his Nova in xtreme street, taking the number 6 position so far.

Bill Trovato sits in the number 2 spot with Olds power and nitrous.

Bob Kurgan has the top spot with clean 8.16 pass.

In Nitto tires Super Street Spiro Pappas has the number one spot with a nice 6.99 @ 201 Jeff Shawver has top MPH in round one with a 7.38 @ nearly 204 putting in number 5 after round one.

In Nosalgia Pro Street Jim Widener has the top position running a 7.56 @ 182.

Robert Remek had a fuel leak on the starting line in his Nelson powered Camaro and was unable to make a pass for first round.
Hopefully it's not serious and they will be back.

In Scorpion Performance Pro Street Benny Alfonso sits on the bump with a 7.33 @ 190 MPH while the other extreme is Tony Bischoff in his 2002 Mercury Cougar with a 6.39 @ 219. Budano sits at number two with a 6.42.

Skip Baskin had a nice wheel stand during round 1 qualifying. The car came down so hard that it put several large scrapes in the track surface
