ORTC - Drag Radial Championship 2009 in Bradenton

The moment all you drag radial fans have been waiting for - the next installment of the ORTC series. The last race at SGMP went great, with top honors going to John Kolivas, which made it into the six second range last weekend in Memphis with Joel Greathouse driving. This is the track where it all started, here in Bradenton, FL. Stick with us all weekend for both editorial and video coverage.

Special thanks to our event sponsor SCT Performance. Check out www.sctflash.com for all their great tuning solutions.

Steve Jackson is going to change out the gears in the blower drive to increase the speed and create more boost. He hurt the good motor a couple of weeks ago and have the EZ Street spec 522 ci BBC in the car for this race. He ran a 4.70 last night testing but doesn’t think that will be enough.

Jason Reukert from VP is here racing for a change after a 1000 mile ride.. He has been out only one time to far with the car and they are replacing the shocks this AM with some help from the TRZ Motorsports crew. The car has a 565 ci BBC with a F3 131 Procharger, and a Mark Micke Kevlar belt drive. He just made his first hit today and ran a 5.34.

Troy Pirez hurt the engine during the test session last night and are up in Spring Hill at Scotty’s Racing Technology getting the necessary repairs.

New Cars

DJ Locano from Lousiana is here with a new car built by Wizard Racing, also in Lousiana. The car has a small block ford with an F3 Procharger.

Jay Trissel from West Unity, Ohio runs this 1984 Mustang in Drag Radial. The small block Ford engine is built by BES and has three stages of Speedtech nitrous on board. They have been 7.90’s @ 180 and some 5.0’s to the 1/8. They are hoping for some 4.9’s this weekend.

This Firebird runs an LSX engine combo and is driven by Steven Fereday. The 408 ci motor runs twin 88 mm turbos and this is the second weekend out for the car. They were in Memphis last weekend and ran 7.85 @ 183 with 76 mm turbos on 6 cylinders. They are having some electronic issues with the new car dropping cylinders down track.. The car was built by late Model Racecraft and Robert Fulmer from FX Racecars. They are out of Huston Texas. They also tore the transmission uo last night and Greg from FTI is getting them fixed back up.

Eric Shermans new ride is another LSX powered machine built for the Real Street class.. Troy Pirez jr. will be behind the wheel for the cars debut as they have yet to make a pass. The engine was built at Don Long’s Fast Forward Race Engines in Crystal Springs, Florida.

Josh Klugger was able to make repairs to the car to make it here after a fire in Palm Beach at his last race. There was no major damage but they had to replace some of the wiring and also freshened the transmission and replaced the thrust bearing in the engine.

Last years winner here Will Stevenson is having some issues with the EFI and also had a weld crack on the oil pan. They are getting the pan repaired now. Last night he ran a 4.71 @ 159 for a new personal best.

Dave Hance is here representing Team North and just went down the track with a 5.16.

Local Drag Radial racer Dave Boger had his best 60' foot today with a 1.25. he has been struggling and is finally geting the car to come around. Time to turn it up down track.

Paul Majors first hit was a 4.67 @ 151.

Kevin Fiscus had the front hanging high earlier. He did a great job of saving it and avoiding the timing cones.

First round of qualifying starts around 5 PM. I'll have some pit notes after we get something to eat.

John Kolivas is changing out the torque converter before round one qualifying.

Steve Jackson had the intercooler pump go bad and they are changing it out.

I didn’t even recognize Dave Hinzman with the new paint. He hit the wall at MIR a few weeks ago and while they were making repairs decided to change the color to a gun metal grey. They are still working out the bugs since the crash.

Forty Millimeter is here with some Team South shirts for sale.

Donald Long has a hospitality tent going with more food than you can shake a stick at. Jason and i stopped by for dinner.

Round one qualifying has started with 7.50 index up first. I will be back after the round with notes.

Paul Major is allowed to run in Drag Radial here at the ORTC this year with a weight adder for non stock suspension. he ran very well and is currently second with a 4.64 @ 171 for top MPH.

Dave Hance lands third spot just a tick behind Major. 4.66 @ 170.
