Three Times a Charm- Now What?

Bluebaugh goes to the Finals for Three Consecutive Events
June 2009

Bluebaugh Racing’s Team Magna Fuel is now a consecutive 3 for 3 in the finals, evaded by a win but more encouraged than ever. Bluebaugh and crew spent the Fathers Day weekend at the Pacific Street Car Associations (PSCA) Summer Nationals in Las Vegas. Crew Chief Deborah Woodard said it was a rough start in qualifying, but we had to prevail at Magna Fuels title race and prevail we did. We were plagued by an electrical gremlin in both rounds of Friday nights qualifying. The launch RPM would not hold sending the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo through the lights before the clock activated resulting in no time. Bluebaugh said it was just frustrating to run two great passes with no credit knowing the last chance would come during the following day’s mid-afternoon Vegas heat. As good fortune would have it, a visiting friend, Dave Hildebrand, spotted a relay just barely loose to the point of being unnoticeable. The next day, Bluebaugh put the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo down a scorching 152 deg. track with a 6.693 @ 212 mph sliding in at number five on the ladder.

In round one, Bluebaugh drew the Magco Corvette of Mike Maggio for a Nitrous vs. Blown show down. As the lights came down Maggio grabbed the leave but nitrous would take the win. Bluebaugh took an early lead running a clean pass to the finish with usual accurate consistency taking the win and advance to round two with a 6.649 @ 213 mph over Maggio at 6.941 @ 206 mph

In round two, Bluebaugh met up with Eric DeRoche who was making a debut showing in his new Dynomite Racing Team, Don Ness GXP. Still working on the cars potential as the only naturally aspirated Pro Street Car to compete, DeRoche managed to upset the number 3 qualifier Clint Hairston in round one. As Bluebaugh and DeRoche paired up, all gathered to see who would fair out for a guaranteed shot into the finals with the winner earning a bye in the semi’s. It was DeRoche on the leave, but it was all over by the 60 ft as Bluebaugh ran away with the win at 6.605 @ 213 mph over the GXP with a 7.383 @ 167.09.

In the final round, Bluebaugh and the team were faced with competition from Randy Walker in his nitrous powered El Camino. Walker has made a strong mark for himself this season earning frequent wins with 6.30’s and 6.20’s with the help of our good friend Pro Mod legend Charles Carpenter. This event was no exception as Carpenter easily ran Walker through the pack.

Bluebaugh and Woodard decided to try something new. Bluebaugh said, our Mickey Thompson tires have been indicating capability of a feat rarely accomplished. That is to hold three units of nitrous turned on before the one-two shift (less than one seconds time in the run). Woodard said its something we have wanted to try and perhaps a long shot chance at Walker. It was a real sight to be seen as Bluebaugh unleashed the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo on the leave. Nitrous flames seemingly shot out five feet on both sides making the car appear to have wings of fire in the night. Our Mickey Thompson Tires held the three units of nitrous through the gear shift. Just after the one-two, the tires began to spin due to a heavy clutch sending Bluebaugh on a wild ride. Woodard said, I heard the spectators screaming expecting the worst as the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo whipped backed and forth violently headed for the wall, center stripe, and back again all at the same time. The experiment ended with Walker running a 6.35 @ 220 mph to Bluebaugh who managed what is likely the most spectacular 12 second run witnessed in the PSCA. Following the run Bluebaugh and Woodard giggled knowing that quite another win had been achieved. With very minor adjustment, it would be possible to stack three units of nitrous in low gear.

Bluebaugh Racing would like to thank Magna Fuel for being our title sponsor this year. Race details and video will be aired on www.speedsceneracing.com at 6p Pacific time June 30th. Our Sponsor JE Pistons is running a bounty on the competition. JE is passing out up to $100 for any racer to trade in their old brand and switch to a high quality JE Piston. See details at http://www.jepistons.com/wanted/ Thanks to Mickey Thompson Tires we are going to be able to put the power of three mean nitrous systems to the ground faster than our competition. As we have always said, Our M/T Tires are the best at putting high horse power to the ground. Special thanks to Friction Unlimited. Our clutch is working better than ever. If you need large diesel truck repair stop by your local W.W. Williams service center and make sure to stop by our pit for cool give ways. Thanks to Fast Forward in Phoenix for our awesome headers. The company compares to the best and beats the competitor’s price by far. Thanks to Highway 69 Racing Products for being a sponsor and joining our crew. Special thanks to our friend and consultant Charles Carpenter Racing for continuing support over the years. Bluebaugh Racing is supported by the World’s Fastest Organization, LLC along with WFO Racing and Machine.

Again Much Thanks to our Sponsors and Supporters
Magna Fuel, Speed Scene Racing, Mickey Thompson Tires, JE Pistons, Fast Forward, W.W. Williams, Highway 69 Racing Products, Friction Unlimited, Hughes Performance, SI Valves, Charles Carpenter Racing, and Cubic Flow Modifications.
