Howard Moon and Von Smith have quite the impressive track record, but this win did not come with ease in round two. Right off the trailer Smith would be en-route to a new pro modified record of 5.84 seconds, though it was short lived by the broken rear end that was discovered after the run. The rear was deemed un-repairable and replacement would need to be installed. Qatar does not have your run-of-the-mill supplier right down the street, so the call was made to
Tim McAmis back in the United States. McAmis shipped the rear to the middle east but not before Von Smith would miss both Thursday qualifying efforts.
With parts in hand, the team worked feverishly to prepare for Friday’s qualifying which would place them sixth for their 6.25-second run. Eliminations proved that they would be no easy task, starting out with teammate’s Mike Castellana then KA Balooshi. Smith lowered the record further against Balooshi with a 5.84. The final would place the Al-Anabi team against rival Popeye Racing and driver Al Arain who shook the tires. Smith traversed the quarter mile one more time with another 5.86-second run to take the win. Look for the Al-Anabi team to strengthen efforts at their home track in the next round which is being held on March 26-27, 2009.
