When somebody says that they have a “barn find,” it usually means a rusty, unrestored car stored away in an out-of-the-way shed or barn. The years usually aren’t kind to these cars, and many of them require thousands of dollars and hours of repairs just to be presentable. Every now and then though, something rare and really, really cool manages to survive decades of neglect mostly intact. These unrestored gems are true time capsules, which often translates to big bucks.

That’s the kind of car purported to by heading to Leake’s annual San Antonio auction, reports Hemmings Auto Blog. This Hertz Shelby GT-350 is among many awesome muscle cars heading for auction, but might take home the top bid crown.

Hertz and Shelby had a close relationship during the mid-to-late 60’s, with the well-known automaker selling over 1,000 ’66 GT-350 Mustangs to the rent-a-car agency. These “Hertz Specials” had a number of special options, among them special Hertz wheels and dealer-installed options. This particular car, fresh off of 20 years of storage and completely unrestored, has a dealer-installed brake booster, radio, as well as the K-code 289 HiPo engine and a C4 automatic transmission.

It’s one of just 50 Hertz GT-350’s painted red, and one of just a handful with the optional white stripe package. Hertz still has some special Mustangs for sale, but we’re not sure they’ll ever approach the level of the original Hertz Special GT-350’s in terms of value or sheer cajones.
