10 Velocity Stacks for a V8 Engine — Why?

First off, there’s much we can’t tell you about this 10-stack, one-of-a-kind intake manifold that is custom machined out of billet aluminum for a 427 Ford Windsor. That’s because the engine owner is keeping the details close to the vest. But when he had the engine dyno’d at Ron Quarnstrom’s R&R Performance in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, a couple of spy photos showed up in the EngineLabs‘ mailbox.

Quarnstrom’s dyno has seen its fair share of unique engines over the years — including a GMC Twin-6 V12 — but the top end of this otherwise factory crate engine will certainly be one of the shop’s milestones.

“The center two stacks run the idle and provide the drivability,” explains Quarnstrom. “If you disconnect the linkage on the other eight, they’re still good for 60 horsepower.”

The 2-piece manifold has been machined to provide air channels and passages from the center stacks. The design is optimized to help promote vacuum, then when the driver gets into the throttle more aggressively, the other eight butterflies open up for power.

“There’s about a half-inch hole that goes to each of the eight cylinders,” continues Quarnstrom. “He delivers the air right above and aimed at each of the injectors where it hits the spray of fuel.”

All we know about the engine’s owner is that “he’s a super machinist.” We don’t even know what vehicle this bullet will power in the near future.

Oh, yeah, we almost forgot to ask about the dyno numbers.

“It made more torque and almost exactly what it’s rated at,” says Quarnstrom.

A quick look at the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog notes that the engine, which doesn’t come with a carb or ignition, is rated at 535 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 545 lb-ft peak torque at 4,500 rpm.

“He just did it to be unique,” sums up Quarnstrom.
