We’ve been hearing talk all over the interwebz about the new Buick Regal like it’s going out of style. Based on the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia of Europe, it has garnered rave reviews from the automotive press all over the world. Hell, we even like it… for a daily driver.
But after being teased with the enthusiast version dubbed the GS for almost two years now, we’re starting to get bored of waiting for it. Initially being claimed to offer AWD and a 255hp 2.0L turbo EcoTec I-4, everyone including your author was let down upon hearing that the proposed, all-wheel drive configuration had later been canned, and that it would only rely upon its front wheels to propel the born again Gran Sport.
Well Buick must have heard our angry cries, and they’ve responded but not by giving us the AWD layout we’ve been bitching about in the first place, but by keeping the FWD configuration, and giving us an additional 15 horsepower for a total of 270. We’ll take it. But as long as they promise us that they’ll later offer an AWD GSX version with 300-plus-horsepower later on.
Buick, not once claiming that the new turbocharged Regal CXL’s or GS’s are in any way, shape, or form a modern day replacement for our haloed GN and T-Type of the ‘80s, they do promise us superb quality and an excellent driving experience. In the meantime, we’ll patiently wait our first drive in the new 2012 Regal GS variant as it is to be in showrooms this fall packing a 6-speed manual transmission, a beefier suspension, a lowered ride height, massive Brembo brakes, and larger rolling stock. While you wait, check out this video we scored from our friends over at GM Inside News.
