The idea of a car-based pickup first rolled around in the 1950s, and all the way through the 1980s the idea sorta stuck around. While the Ford Ranchero and Chevy El Camino are the two most famous examples, the car-truck combination was occasionally inflicted on other vehicles, from the Chevy Corvette to, in this case, a classic 1966 Lincoln Continental.
Ostensibly called a “flower car”, this precursor to a hearse has probably carried more mournful flowers than anything else. Still, the carpeted bed could be repurposed to a number of other uses, and if nothing else it’d be an excellent icebreaker at just about any car show.
Priced at $7,500 on Craigslist and located just outside of Kansas City (on the Kansas side), this project was originally put together by the Hines Motor Company of America. The front end is undoubtedly that of a ‘66 Lincoln Continental, and the back half was borrowed from a Ford Ranchero, right down to the gold-flecked badges that still read “Ranchero”. It’s hard to say which frame was kept intact, and which was just plopped on in place of the original, though if we had to guess we’d say that it’s more Lincoln than Ranchero, a sentence we never thought we’d have to write.
Powering this weird hybrid is a 462 cubic-inch big-block Ford motor that almost certainly needs a going through, though the Craigslist ad says it starts and runs, albeit “crappily”. There’s bound to be other problems in a car this old and unique, and not all of them will be easy to fix. But your reward is a classic Lincoln look with Ranchero utility … another sentence that just feels weird to type.
