Chrysler has reintroduced several of their well-known nameplates, some of them were a hit, some were slightly askew, and others – well, the jury is still out on them. One such car is the new Dart – which many are calling the new Neon, because we just can’t see this FWD compact carrying our beloved Dart namesake – let alone sporting a Hemi.
The Challenger came back to us as a sport compact in the early 1980s, and it was a miss (even though it was RWD). When it came back as a musclecar in 2008, and had a Hemi option, it was a definite hit with the Pentastar crowd.
The Charger’s first resurrection was nothing like the original, with front wheel drive and a four-banger. The only thing it really had going for it was that it was a two-door, because the second return of the Charger brought us the big V8 power and RWD – but added another pair of doors. We can’t wait to see if the ‘Cuda is going to make its way back to us!
One car that many people feel needs to make a comeback, but hasn’t been discussed as of yet by Chrysler, is the Coronet. The Coronet has been around decades longer than the Challenger or Charger, and though it shared the B-body platform with other cars, the Hemi Coronet was a favorite amongst Mopar fans.
So when we saw this 1968 Coronet on Speed Hunters with an awkwardly widened and stretched body, slammed down on some big 22″ American Racing wheels and fat meats, we had to take a closer look. There’s something unique about this classic, but until you get a good, close-up view, it isn’t all that obvious.
Inside the Coronet, the interior was modern and sported every creature comfort of today, including a modern Charger dash and seats. Under the hood was a modern 6.1L Hemi with all the accompanying necessities, wires, and switches. It was starting to all come together, but this was not an engine and interior swap, nosiree – it was something much better, and just as difficult to do, if not more so.
Much like the Chrysler 300 converted to a Charger that we brought to you back in April of 2013, Steven Jarudd from Sweden brings us this 2007 Dodge Charger that’s been re-skinned with the shell of a 1968 Coronet body and a 1969 Coronet front end. It wasn’t such a simple task, though, because the Coronet had a shorter wheelbase than the Charger, and needed some massaging to make it work.
To make the width of the classic fit the track of the modern musclecar, the fenders and quarters were also stretched a bit, and the whole creation sits on an Air Lift Performance suspension. Outside, the subtle touches of modern are a remote giveaway, such as the modern HEMI and SRT8 badges. But the beaten look of this Coronet makes it appear to be just a big-wheeled classic, rather than a modern/classic hybrid.
If Chrysler is listening, this Coronet is calling and just begging to be brought back into production. And what a canvas to start with, we wouldn’t change a thing – just give it one of those satin paint finishes and be done with it. Would you change anything about this car?
