After just one model year on sale, Chevrolet’s performance sedan is already starting to see some pretty substantial revisions. For 2015, the SS can now be had a no-cost optional six-speed manual gearbox, while the excellent MagneRide adaptive suspension system now also appears on the options sheet. However, it appears the performance engineers at GM are not content to leave it at that, as the SS may soon be receiving a more track-focused handling package similar the 1LE package offered on Camaro SS.
On the Camaro, the 1LE package is comprised of unique gearing, more aggressive suspension tuning, and uprated tires that help make the coupe capable of generating more than 1g of lateral acceleration. The report over at Motor Trend suggests that the SS would also ditch its current staggered tire setup for equal sized rubber on all four corners. While the 1LE package doesn’t offer any power upgrades, the revised gearing in the Camaro resulted in nearly a half-second faster 0-60 mph time.
Such a set of upgrades could heat up competition between the SS and its closest rival, the 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack, which boasts a 392ci V8 that generates 485 horsepower and 470 pound of torque in comparison to the SS’s 6.2-liter V8 that makes 415hp and 415 lb-ft, and might serve to turn the SS into something of a modern-day version of the BMW E39 M5.
However, if Chevrolet really wants to move these sedans off dealer lots, they’re also going to have to address the rental car looks. But since the SS is essentially sold in the United States to satisfy an agreement that a certain number of Holden Commodores be built for export, the chances of a costly visual rework remain pretty remote.
