Chrysler’s new LY chassis started rolling down the line for good today. The company’s Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant geared up for an introduction to the press and local dignitaries just before lunchtime. Attendees will be able to see production versions of the 2011 Challenger, Charger and Chrysler 300, all of which are being built on the updated LY chassis.
The company will certainly be featuring the new PentaStar V6 engine, whose 3.6-liter displacement will deliver up to 305hp when installed in the Challenger, also sets new standards for fuel economy. As configured for the Dodge Charger, the V6 engine provides 42hp more than the previous model. In addition, the 3.6-liter exhibits a broad, flat torque curve with 90-percent of peak torque available between 1800 – 6350 rpm.
The 2011 Challenger and the restyled-for-2011 Charger will also be available with the company’s 5.7-liter HEMI engine with Variable Valve Timing and Fuel Saver Technology. The same engine will equip the 2011 300C and 300S variants. The recently-announced 6.4-liter HEMI engine will power the newest SRT-badged models.
The Brampton assembly plant was built in 1986 and acquired by Chrysler Corporation with purchase of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in August 1987. Production of the Dodge Charger was launched in early 2005. The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 launched production in May 2008, with the Dodge Challenger following in August 2008.
