The Dodge Challenger has managed to go largely unmolested since its 2008 debut, utilizing only the most mild of nip-and-tuck techniques to improve its image since its launch. Not that we’re complaining; the Challenger is the only muscle car currently available the truly looks and embodies the spirit of its namesake. Still, it is due to be replaced soon, though Chrysler has a few more improvements in mind before sending it off.

Chrysler has made some mild improvements to the 2014 Dodge Challenger that includes a new launch control feature for the SRT8 model, as well as a pair of new suspension and appearance packages for the V6 model. That should keep Mopar fans happy for another year or two.

The Challenger SRT8, with its 470 horsepower 6.4 liter HEMI V8 engine, is the only top-of-the-line muscle car without launch control. Both the Camaro ZL1 and Shelby GT500 have the drag strip-assisting system, allowing these big bruisers to leave the starting line in a hurry. Now the Challenger has the technology to help it keep up.

Meanwhile, Challengers equipped with the 305 horsepower Pentastar V6 have two new suspension and appearance packages to choose from. The Super Sport Group adds 20-inch wheels, performance tires, 3:07 rear-end gearing, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a sport suspension, bigger brakes, and a new “Sport” shifting mode for the transmission. There’s also a Sinster Sport Group package which replaces the chrome wheels with blacked-out wheels, and SXT Plus buyers can now add HID headlights.

Still no mention of the supposedly supercharged 6.2 liter “Hellcat” HEMI engine in the works, and with a new Challenger right around the corner, we are left wondering how much longer Chrysler will keep us waiting. At least we have a few more toys to play with on the 2014 model.
