2015 Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary Edition Limited To 1,964 Units

Today is the big day for Mustang fans around the world as the official 50th birthday celebration kicks off, and Ford is celebrating with a very limited 2015 Mustang 50th Anniversary Edition. With just 1,964 units available for purchase, you can bet collectors are already ringing their accountants and local Ford dealers in a bid to buy one.

The 2015 Ford Mustang is arguably the biggest story of the year, and 50 years ago to the day Ford revealed the new Mustang to an audience of millions around the world. For its 50th anniversary, the 5.0 V8 and 3.7 liter V6 carry on, though the 2.3 liter EcoBoost four-cylinder will be available for those looking for a 21st century performance solution.

At the New York Auto Show this morning, Ford unveiled the 50th Anniversary Edition Mustang, which keeps things simple for buyers by offering just two paint colors and options. You can get the 50th Anniversary Edition 2015 Mustang in either Wimbledon White or Kona Blue with your choice of either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Equipped with the Performance Pack, manual transmission buyers will get a 3:73 rear end gearing, while automatic Mustangs get a 3:55 rear end. As it turns out, buying a 50th Anniversary Edition Mustang is the only way to get the Performance Pack AND an automatic transmission for 2015.

All 50th Anniversary Edition Mustangs will come equipped with the 5.0 V8 making 420 horsepower, much to the chagrin of EcoBoost fans. Since the original Mustang never had a turbo engine though (that came later in the early 80s with the turbo and then SVO model) it makes sense to keep this special edition limited to the big engine. Ford also added hints of chrome around the tail lights and a special “50 Years” badging on the side fenders and back end.

But as far as options go, it’s just a choice of colors and transmissions. Every other option has already been ticked off by Ford, and Bill Ford Jr. made it clear that he expects these limited edition Mustangs to become instant collectibles, after driving on stage in one. On the inside is a leather-wrapped steering wheel and two-tone leather seats unique to the 50th Anniversary Edition, and with just 1,964 units for sale, we expect them to sell out in very short order.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention all the other standard features new on the 2015 Mustang, including push-button start, enhanced TrackApps, a new generation of the SYNC system,as well as a new level of smartphone integration. This is the most high-tech Mustang ever, even as it harkens back to an earlier era. As a final nod to the collectors no doubt trampling themselves to get their orders in, Bill Ford Jr.’s signature will be included on a special serialized nameplate on the dashboard.

It’s a great way to kick off the Mustang’s 50th birthday celebration, and for a few lucky buyers, they’ll forever own a piece of Mustang history.
