6th Gen Camaro Will Offer Magnetic Ride Control, Dual Mode Exhaust

cq5dam.web.1280.1280(34)The slow IV drip of information leading up to the 6th Gen Camaro’s official introduction on May 16 continues: This week, Chevrolet revealed that the 2016 Camaro will offer Magnetic Ride Control for SS models, a feature previously found only on the ZL1 version of the Camaro. MRC uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to continuously react to the road surface and driver inputs, reading them 1,000 times per second and adjusting damper firmness by changing the viscosity of the fluid inside through the application of a magnetic field. The system will offer three preset calibrations – Sport, Tour, and Track.

Chevy is also touting the Camaro’s new Drive Mode Selector, a feature previously seen on the new Stingray. At the turn of a knob, up to eight different systems ranging from the drive by wire throttle’s response, to the power steering feel, and the stability control parameters adjust to suit the chosen mode. Based on the release, the feature will be available on more than just V8 models, with Snow/Ice, Tour, and Sport modes available across the board, and Track mode additionally available on the SS.

Finally, the new Camaro will feature an enhanced dual mode exhaust, which uses electronically-controlled bypass valves in the mufflers to allow lower restriction (and more volume) under hard acceleration, and a quiet “stealth mode” for when you don’t want to attract so much attention.

With less than a month to go to the unveiling, there are still a few more tidbits left to reveal. Stay tuned and we will bring them all to you as they are released, and mark your calendar for our full, in-person coverage of the Detroit introduction.
