A Flawless Red 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona Surfaces At Mecum Auctions

With their sights set on victory in NASCAR, Dodge pulled all their assets and created a true speed machine. Mecum Auctions is showcasing one of these rare aero muscle cars and will be auctioning the coveted 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona this April in Houston, Texas.

Ahead of its time, the Dodge Daytona has some pretty outlandish features that are tailored for the speedway, not public roads or highways. To put into perspective, aerodynamic modifications include a 23-inch tall rear wing and a sheet-metal nose on the front-end to extend the length of the vehicle.

The 23-inch wing in all its glory.

Furthermore, it had custom front fenders and a hood that was modeled after the upcoming 1970 Dodge Charger at that point in time. The Daytona carried trim specifications from the ’69 Charger 500, including a heavy-duty suspension and power front disc brakes.

Not to mention, this Dodge Daytona 1 of only 20 vehicles with a four-speed manual transmission produced. Under the hood is a 426ci 7.0L HEMI V8 that produces 425hp.

The engine makes this Daytona an exceptional gem in that only 70 of the 503 Daytonas produced in 1969 have a 426 HEMI V8. Painted in Mopar R4 Charger Red, this Daytona calls for attention wherever it goes.

What is more, Goodyear Polyglas Redline tires are wrapped around the wheels of this Daytona, providing adequate traction and a retro look. The interior includes bucket seats with a woodgrain console, Rallye instrument cluster and a wood-rimmed sport steering wheel.

Due to their phenomenal speed and track performance, NASCAR amended their rules, banning all four of the aero cars including the Dodge Daytona by the end of 1970. To note, the other three aero cars that were banned were built by Ford, Mercury and Plymouth.

The Dodge Daytona’s rarity makes it a highly sought after muscle machine. Consumers may never see cars as radical as the Daytona ever again.

But for those feeling nostalgic, look no further. How much do you think this Daytona will auction for? Feel free to comment below.
