Amazing Twin Turbo Second-Gen Firebird Heading to Mecum Auction

It’s been a couple of years now since we last checked in on the famed twin-turbocharged 1970 Firebird built by Michigan-based All Speed Customs, but as luck would have it, it’s once again hitting our news desks. Don’t worry, nothing has happened to the gorgeous yet controversial bird. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Now thanks to Mecum Auctions, those of you who fell in love with the second-gen F-body have a chance to take it home as your own!

We first ran across the Firebird restomod mid-build back in 2011 and then followed up with it in the spring of 2012, after the car was complete. The owner at the time, Tom Conkright, had quite the beast on his hands when all was said and done and it showed in the intense reactions on either side of the spectrum that the car got.

Now two-and-a-half years later, the car is being put up for auction at the Chicago Mecum event, set to kick off later this week.

Now just to rial the masses once again, let’s take a look at what this beast is made of. The Firebird still maintains all its custom body work, 480ci Pontiac engine fitted with twin 66mm Bullseye turbochargers, a Moser 12-bolt rearend with 3.55 gears, Rockland Tranzilla T56 6-speed transmission, Wilwood brakes and a Detroit Speed Engineering suspension system. Custom components on the car include a custom hydraulic roller camshaft from COMP Cams, a billet Visner intake manifold, custom air-to-air intercooler, stainless manifolds and headers, custom plumbing, a steel aero package and custom Forgiato Ritorno wheels.

As you may remember from our previous looks at this beautiful car, it hasn’t been hulled up in a garage and used as a show piece since its completion. Actually, it’s been used as a daily driver, raced, used in the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational competition, and has even been a SEMA Show vehicle…. twice.

That, of course, doesn’t even begin to explain the many awards, online and print magazine features the car has earned.

Though there are some haters out there, we know that the love for this car is exponential and we can only anticipate the fury of bids it will bring when it crosses the block in Chicago on Saturday, October 11^th as one of the event’s Star Cars.
