There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding the new Chris Evans’ fronted version of Top Gear that’s expected to debut later this year – particularly in terms of who would share the hosting duties with him.
Initial rumors pointed to two other gearheads on board to join Evans – automotive journalist and tire abuser Chris Harris and Nurhburgring hot shoe Sabine Schmidt were said to be on the short list. Then in recent weeks, rumors began to circulate that Friends star Matt LeBlanc might be joining the cast.
As it turns out, both of these rumors were true, but they only got half of the story. Two more presenters will join Evans, Harris, Schmidt and LeBlanc: Former Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan and auto journalist Rory Reid are in the mix as well, bringing the grand total of new Top Gear hosts to six.
Some of these names might seem incongruous to fans – particularly LeBlanc, whose biggest claim to fame is playing the lovable dullard “Joey” on a prime time sitcom. But it’s worth reminding those fans that LeBlanc once held the highest spot on the Power Lap leader boards for a non-professional driver, and that’s truly no small feat.
As far as Schmidt goes, you might remember her from the time she nearly beat Clarkson in a Jaguar sports sedan around the famed German race track while at the wheel of a bone-stock Ford Transit van. She’s faster than you, trust me.
Reid proves to be the only true outlier here, as he was selected from the open tryouts that the show held last year. No matter how you slice it though, there’s a lot of talent in mix here. What remains to be seen is whether or not they can make a show as compelling as the one that the former Top Gear hosts have in the works over at Amazon.
