If there is any car in the American automobile lineup that took the whole “retro” design theme too far, it was the PT Cruiser. Sure, it was somewhat of a sales success, and towards the end of its lifespan it even got a nice little turbo motor to give it a much needed horsepower boost. And yet there was always something…off about the PT Cruiser that kept a lot of gearheads away. After all, how to you make a wrong-wheel drive retro cruiser any better?
Drop in a Viper SRT-10 drivetrain, for starters. Then shave off half of the rear end, and what you’ve got is a Viper-powered PT Cruiser pickup that Carscoop happened across on eBay.
Not that turning a PT Cruiser into a pickup truck makes it any less ugly. But the seller says the transformation was necessary in order to make room for the Viper fuel tank and suspension. There just wasn’t room enough to leave it as a four-door sedan, which is all well and good because this custom rod has never been driven on the street.
That’s a shame, because under the hood is a 500 horsepower V10 engine from the Viper, as well as the Viper’s six-speed manual transmission. Yup, this bad boy is all Viper underneath. Too bad it still looks awful.
Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and as a show car, we’re sure this PT Viper got plenty of attention. To each their own, right? And hey, at least it is a creative and unique vehicle, so we gotta give the builders props for that. We still wouldn’t be caught dead in it, but that hasn’t stopped plenty of people from bidding on it. How much would you pay for this one-off creation?
