You know the argument well enough; “Muscle cars weren’t meant to handle. They’re made just to go in a straight line.” Well, these people 1) don’t know their muscle cars really well, 2) don’t know their domestic automotive history, and 3) apparently have never taken a look back through vintage racing footage.
At the time, Chrysler’s torsion bar front suspension was praised as a massive innovation and a superior suspension package to most full-sized and intermediate sedans at the time. Ford’s efforts with the Mustang in road racing birthed the Trans Am and SCCA pony car battle including the creation of the T/A Challengers, Z/28 Camaros, Trans Am Pontiacs, and Plymouth’s AAR ‘Cuda. There is one thing classic muscle cars weren’t designed to do, and that’s fly…
This video is so packed with classic muscle cars and plenty of hapless pursuing police cruisers landing so stinkin’ hard into the ground that our spines feel a little impacted just for watching. Comprised of clips from “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Smokey and The Bandit,” “Starsky and Hutch,” and “The Fast and The Furious,” this quick video is a fun time waster and features plenty of Ford Torino, Dodge Chargers, and Pontiac Trans Ams jumping rivers, trucks, and other cars.
Doubtlessly, every one of these cars were woefully obliterated upon their return to terra firma. In fact, there’s one Dukes’ landing that is so painful to watch that you’ll tense up when you watch in slow motion, as the General lands completely flat, buckling all four corners. Worse of all, the clip cuts away as the Charger veers helplessly towards a very large tree. If the driver swerved away in time, we simply don’t know.
Oh yeah, in case you’re too young to remember the ear rape that is Jefferson Airplane’s “We Built This City,” you’ve been fairly warned.
