Carroll Shelby was born in Texas in 1923, and by the time he was 40 he had helped create what would go on to become one of the most iconic American cars of all time. We are referring of course to the Shelby Cobra. Though Shelby has passed away, his legacy lives on in his cars, continuing a debate of what is better; the classic Shelbys, or the more contemporary offering?

One of the first, and most interesting facts is that Shelby decided to sell the famed Cobra trademark to Ford for…wait for it…$1. Yup, one of the most iconic car names of all times was sold to one of the largest companies on the world for a buck. Back in 1965, $1 could have got you a gallon of milk, a six pack of beer, or 3 (!!) gallons of gas.

Other facts have to do with famed locations around the world. For example, people spent a collective $247,475,000 on Shelby vehicles in 2012, enough money to build six and a half Eiffel Towers. Other interesting facts; it would take the 2013 Shelby GT500 just 4 days to traverse the 5,500 miles of the Great Wall of China at 165 mph. That’s a pretty epic road trip.
