When the Ford Mustang made it’s debut half way through 1964 it shook the world. No car has captured the public’s eye and media attention quite like the original 1964 ½ Ford Mustang. Never before had a car like it ever been built. It was the world’s first pony car or a compact car that was affordable and had the performance options of a Ford Galaxie.

Thanks to it’s good looks, Ford’s excellent marketing campaign and a certain charm the car had, the 1964 1/2 Mustang quickly became a hit among the car buying public and roughly 686,000 cars were sold in 1965. The car quickly flood the streets where it could be found racing on drag strips and at stop lights across the USA.
The Mustang was technically supposed be released for the 1965 model year but it was released early half way through 1964.

The 1964 Mustangs were officially ’65s, but they had enough differences that they were later documented as 1964 ½. Differences in 1964 1/2 include a different shaped leading edge on the hood, a generator charging system, a large horn mounted on the frame behind the radiator and low compression 170ci six (U-code), a 260 2V (F-code), 289 4V with 210 HP (D-code) engines or 289 Hi-Po with 271 HP (K-Code). Aside from the 271 horsepower 289 Hi-Po the K-code cars also came equipped with Special Handling Package, front disc brakes and five-dial gauges which included an 8,000 RPM tachometer.

The 1964 ½ ‘Stangs are their own unique breed, the first of the ponies that helped create Mustang Mania in ’64 – who’s legacy, much like the fab four, still carries on today. Due to the rarity of these cars, they fetch a hefty price tag; but not usually $55,000 like this one on Craigslist. Usually they are in the ball park of $15K -$30K. However, the seller claims this one only has 64,000 miles clocked on the odometer, which being a clean survivor does up this value. How much do you think an original 1964 1/2 Mustang K Code is worth?
