Sleek lines and a clean jet black paint job were what grabbed our attention when we saw this ’68 Pontiac GTO. We were further intrigued after we learned that a rumblin’ Pontiac 400 mill sits under the hood.
The sweet motor propelling this machine is the original numbers matching block with lots of go-fast goodies: a 455 lifter cam, an upgraded intake manifold, headers, and a bigger breathing Flowmaster exhaust. It’s backed by a TH400 trans which runs to a tire screeching 3.55 ring and pinion rear end.
Inside the car, it looks as good as it did on the showroom floor thanks to new carpet, new trim panels, and a new dash. Its Starlight black paint job is still in excellent shape, save for a few age marks that we’ll just call patina.
In the late 1960’s the Pontiac GTO was the American dream on wheels. It was a Super Stock drag car that could be bought and driven daily by the average working man. It had a sleek body, a Ram Air hood and a go-fast persona which was backed by 360 horses and 445 lb-ft of torque.
Its monster power always made for an exiting morning commute. With a stock 14.5 second quarter mile and a large after market the GTO was a popular ride of choice among drag racers and hot rodders.
With an asking price of $25,000 some people might argue there are better things to spend that kind of cash on: a down payment on a Mac mansion, new furniture, new jewelry for the Mrs, etc. But let’s be real here: if you had $25K, a seven nation army couldn’t prevent you from buying this car.
