A couple of years ago, Dodge, Nissan, and Porsche were all engaged in a battle of automotive genital comparison as they each fought over a very prestigious record. That would be the record for the fastest production car ‘round the famed German race track, the Nürburgring. Depending on who you ask, it could be one, or the other, or a series of track-only, small-production, kinda-street-legal race cars.
But it ain’t. Rather, Nürburgring blog Bridge to Gantry put together a table of all the top competitors. While their choice is sure to upset ze Germans and the Japanese, it’s the good ol’ 2009 Dodge Viper ACR that takes hope the coveted “fastest production car around the Nürburgring.”
The competition, as you might imagine, as very stiff, with the Pagani Zonda R being the overall fastest “production” car around the track. However, it is neither street legal, nor legal for racing in the GT series, and therefore disqualified. So how about the Ferrari 599XX? Well, you can’t even buy this car, as it’s a sort of “rolling laboratory.” The Gumpert Apollo is “built to order,” and while street legal in Germany, it isn’t so in many other countries. Disqualified.
The real choice came down to the Porsche GT2RS, Nissan GT-R, and the Dodge Viper ACR. The Porsche plausibly made the run ‘round the ‘Ring in 7-minutes, 18 seconds, but without video proof there’s no way to back up the claim. The Dodge Viper made it’s way around the track in 7-minutes, 22.1 seconds, with the Nissan GT-R hot on its heels at 7-minutes 22.2 seconds. That tenth-of a second means that the 2009 Dodge Viper ACR is the current production car king for the Nürburgring race track. What’s more, everything from the tires to the suspension settings carried over to the production vehicle. How long it can hold on to that title is anybody’s guess, but for now we’re sure Dodge will proudly boast of its accomplishments over its German and Japanese competitors.
