The market for Shelby Mustangs is still hot and heavy, and the market for certain models is bringing big dollars at auction. But there are different levels of desirable, even when it comes to Shelby Mustangs. You might think that a mostly-complete, garage-kept Shelby would bring big bucks, even on eBay, but a ‘69 Shelby Mustang just doesn’t have the desirability of a ‘65 or ‘66 Mustang.
There was an eBay auction for a ‘69, 1-of-33 Competition Red Shelby GT500 that ended at $20,000 without meeting reserve, which is surprising given how well kept and complete the car is. The collector car market, she is a fickle thing.
To boot, this car has had just one owner, the man who bought it back in 1969 after returning from Vietnam. The car logged around 62,000 miles before the 1980s brought on a series of mechanical malfunctions that knocked it out of commission. The water pump went out, and the heater core started leaking. To cap it all off, some teflon tarp got stuck in the flywheel or starter, making it unable to start.
But other than that (and a pair of missing fog lights), this Shelby is all already there, though the intake and carb have been removed and are sitting in the trunk. Even so, the auction ended at $20,000 without hitting reserve, and it appears that the seller ended the auction early, which is a shame. These late-model Shelbys still had plenty of performance going for them, though we’ll admit, they’re not the best looking of the bunch.
What do you think would be a fair price for this unpopular-but-complete Shelby Mustang?
