OK, there was certainly a lot going on in the sixties, so if you somehow missed out on this particular little corner of history, all can easily be forgiven. One could argue that the Corvair was General Motors’ last foray into total innovation and one for which they were soundly slapped by market and government alike.
Technical merit, however, did enable the design of an alternate light truck design, based on the air-cooled, opposed six cylinder engine, rear drive layout of the Corvair passenger car.
This alternative was called Greenbriar and it was made available both as a van and a pickup truck, called Rampside. In fact, even Jay Leno owns one of the latter and considers it an important component of his collection.
The current example is said to be in fully restored condition. While the seller was looking for a purchase price of $15,500, bidding never passed the $7,000 mark. The photos included with the listing show the vehicle to be in stellar condition. If you are inclined to think of this of this offering as unusual today, it was no less so in its time.
This Greenbrier van on eBay is likely to be one of the Top Ten most esoteric North American vehicles on just about anyone’s list that actually knows about the vehicle. If you’re looking for something unusual at a reasonable price, consider getting in touch with the seller of this truck. You can still do that through their eBay listing.
As always, if you’re not local to where the car is being sold form, we strongly recommend having a local inspection done before entering into any serious negotaiations, even if its just in the state next to you. This is certainly an unuasual acquisition and yo wouldn’t want your first photo with it to be from the end of a hook.
