Just put up for a No Reserve auction is this 1963 Pontiac Catalina station wagon. The seller has included photos of documentation from the NHRA, IHRA and AHRA as to the past records that this 389cui V8 Indian holds. These were set in the period of 1971 through 1974, when the car was actively raced out of Miami-Hollywood Speedway.
The engine, which the current owner says puts out 525hp, is bored out to 400cui and fitted with dual quad carburetors on a cross ram intake manifold. Immediately behind are a Turbo Hydromatic transmission and a Dana 60 rear end.
The seller mentions that the car was raced during the 2009 NHRA Hot Rod Reunion and turned in an 11.86 ET. According to the records posted with the car, it seems to have got faster with age.
In 1963, the station wagon version of the Catalina rode on a 119-inch wheelbase, which was one inch shorter than for other body styles. Six and nine passenger versions were available, with the former weighing in at 4,175 pounds shipping weight.
The difference is significant compared to the 2-door sedan that year which weighed a good 500 pounds less. On the station wagon, most of the additional weight would have been added aft of the drive, which would help improve traction as would the slightly shorter wheelbase.
If you’re looking to get into nostalgia racing, showing up in this classic will surely get you an immediate pass. Bidding starts at $12,500 and the current listing will expire on May 1st. Check it out. This is one heck of a grocery getter.
