eBay Find of the Day: ’64 Galaxie 500 R-Code 427

Despite being the last year for the second generation Ford Galaxie, Ford was not letting up on its efforts to dominate the performance markets. The 1964 car was described as a “car bred in open competition and built for total performance.” With a 427cui V8 under the hood, Ford continued NASCAR racing and built special lightweight versions for drag racing. In keeping with NASCAR homologation requirements, the cars that were raced also had to be available to the general public.

The current example came from the factory with a 427 center-oiler, dual quad-equipped V8 under the hood. Backed by the Borg & Warner big spline T10 4-speed transmission and a 4.10 ratio rear axle, this car was not built for the faint of heart. According to the seller, it is one of about 2,500 such cars built with this equipment list.

With just 75,279 miles on the odometer, this survivor R-Code Galaxie 500 appears to be in such good shape from being garage stored for thirty years. The photos tell a pretty exciting story by themselves.

According to the description in the eBay listing, the only non-stock components are the Thunderbolt hood that was installed by the previous owner, in addition to some tow bar brackets, a fuel tank support and some aftermarket gauges.

The 427 engine is reported to have been ‘freshened,’ as in taken apart to see what 30 years of sitting may have done to it. No significant damage or problems were apparently found, so the 7-liter mill was put back together with all wear items replaced.

Bidding on this car has ended without it selling. An immediate purchase can be made for $45,000 and the seller has provided extensive information and contact details in the eBay Listing. Located in Muskegon, MI, this Ford Galaxie 500 represents a part of Ford Racing history. While the seller has made extensive efforts to provide a detailed and extensive description of the car, we always recommend a personal inspection before making any commitments.

This is not a reflection on the individual offering, but a common sense practice when dealing over the Internet. If you are not able to check it out in person, or do not have a friend in the area that might have a look, consider engaging an independent inspector to check it out and report back to you.

While the lightweight 427’s were still not competitive in drag racing, they triggered the development of the Fairlane-based Thunderbolts – essentially the same drivetrain in a mid-sized car – which went on to dominate quarter mile racing.
