Vintage drag racing cars have seen a recent resurgence in interest over the last decade, as Baby Boomers mature and old drag racers retire to the 1,320 in the sky. This has led to something of a Renaissance among old car restorers who are trying to dig out and restore legendary race cars from the high point of the American muscle car era.

But this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Super Stocker needs no restoration. It is all original from the engine to the paint to the carpet, and it is up for auction on eBay right now…with a starting bid of $300,000.

You would think for that kind of money, you’d be buying a really, really famous race car, and you’d be right. You see, this ’69 Super Stocker actually belonged to the West Coast “Ford Drag Team”, and was piloted by Ed Terry and Dick Wood. It was quite the sensation at the drag strip, powered by a 428 Super Cobra Jet V8 engine (though several different engines were used between 1969 and 1970 and it even had a 460 engine in it for some time as well.)

While Terry was the captain of the West Coast team, his East Coast counterpart was Hubert “Georgia Shaker” Platt. The car raced for two seasons before being retired, and has enjoyed a posh existence since, remaining one of the few complete drag racing survivors from that era. It actually went up for auction back in 2002 for $50,000, which seems like pennies compared to the starting bid of today’s $300,000 auction. But it is a one-of-a-kind piece of Ford drag racing history…and we wouldn’t mind getting our hands on it ourselves. If only it didn’t cost as much as a house.
