When Mercury launched the Cougar in 1967, it was met with immediate praise and approval including winning Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” award. It was marketed as the gentleman’s muscle car, an answer to the more “vulgar” Mustang by offering a standard V8. The Cougar changed constantly from year to year, and the pinnacle of Cougar design for many came in 1969. That doesn’t mean there still isn’t room for improvement.
We found this sleek looking 1969 Cougar convertible up for auction on eBay. Built by Hot Rods Express, it is loaded with many modern amenities, a custom body, and a sharp paint job. This is one house cat we wouldn’t mind keeping around.
This car is completely new from the ground up, with a custom perimeter frame and full body drop complete with Heidts tubular control arms and RideTech’s airbag suspension that lets you raise or lower the Cougar at will. The door handles and locks have been shaved, and the Cougar has been painted PPG’s “Vibrance” color. There is not one speck of rust, not one dent, nor is a single body panel out of alignment according to the eBay description.
As one might expect, the interior has been completely customized. It features a one-off dashboard with handmade wood trim. Even the carpet was imported from Germany, and a DVD/CD/MP3 player is connected to high-end speakers throughout the car. Of course a right like this needs a deserving engine, and a 4.6 liter Cobra motor sits under the custom hood scoop. It has won plenty of awards the seller lists, and we’ve never seen anything quite like this Cougar before. With a “Buy It Now” price of $135,000, we’re tempted to call this one of the best Cougars we’ve ever seen. It will certainly stand out at any Mustang or Ford show, that’s for sure.
