Looking at the condition of this rare 1987 Trans Am GTA, it’s hard to believe that the clock reads a mere 96 miles. In its current state, it looks like a neglected piece of history that sat rotting away in the elements for a lengthy amount of time.
Supposedly, this ’87 GTA that we found on eBay was stolen from a GM dealership back in ’87 when the car was brand new and when it was recovered, it was lacking the hood, front bumper, rear hatch, wheels and brake lights. Someone then purchased the car at auction and added the then-new GTA parts to the car, but then left it to rot behind his shop.
About a year ago, the eBay seller purchased the neglected Trans Am GTA with plans to restore it to former glory. According to the seller, after pulling the spark plugs, lubing the cylinders, and about a half hour of tinkering around with the engine, the car started right up. However, after trying to start it again he realized the fuel pump may need to be replaced.
While it looks like a possibility that someone may have tampered with the odometer and faked a plausible story, a clue on the side window appears that the original story may be true. If you look closely at the window, years in the heat has helped burn the ink from the original window sticker onto the window. This may be the perfect project for someone looking to restore a rare, low-mileage find that has seen brighter days.
The car has a short time left and bidding is still pretty low. The reserve is not met, but hopefully it will go into some good hands that plan to put this rare Trans Am GTA back on the road and accumulate a few of those lost miles. Happy bidding!
