The new Cadillac ATS-V is already putting its sports sedan rivals on notice with its 464 horsepower, twin turbocharged V6, which dishes out significantly more grunt than mills like the twin-scroll six cylinder in new BMW M3 and M4, but it appears The General might not be done there.
A report from Motor Trend indicates that the naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8 from the Camaro Z/28 and C6 Corvette Z06 might be finding its way into an even tastier version of Cadillac’s smaller sports sedan (and coupe) in the near future.
In the Camaro and ‘Vette that motor makes 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque on its way to a 7000 rpm red line, making it a worthy track companion in those cars. Given the ATS-V’s relatively light weight and nimble handling, there’s every indication it would take the ATS-V+’s performance credentials right into the stratosphere.
The rumor also suggests that the gearboxes from the C7 Corvette – namely the eight speed automatic and the seven speed manual transmissions – would replace the ‘boxes currently being used in the standard ATS-V. Motor Trend also offhandedly mentions that a “quick-shifting dual-clutch gearbox should arrive later”, but since there isn’t a dual clutch gearbox in GM’s parts bin for use with any road car they make, we’re not going to hold our breath on a DCT landing in a new GM product any time soon.
We’d also venture to guess that if the ATS-V is going to get more power, it’ll likely also see bigger brakes, grippier rubber, and an even more track-focused suspension tune. For the time being this is all hearsay, but any rumor that puts the LS7 between the fender wells of a new car is the kind of water cooler gossip we can get behind.
