Over the course of the last several months, we’ve taken a journey back in time as part of our Flashback Friday to take a look at many of the pioneering drag strips that once roamed the earth. From state-of-the-art racing facilities that played host to the biggest names to ever strap on a helmet, to the small local tracks that played integral roles in small communities.
Well, a recent and popular discussion over on the Class Racer forums got us to thinking about this very topic and we decided that this week, it may be time for a mid-term, if you will. The thread over on their forum simply asks the question “if you could race at one historic closed race track, what would it be?”
As would be expected, the responses to this question are as varied as the locales of the individual writing them, but popular strips such as Lions, Orange County, and U.S 30 are mentioned frequently, while others like Fremont, Dover Dragstrip, Connecticut Dragway, Niagara Dragstrip, and many more are all named as well. And chances are there are handfuls of of tracks being named that you’ve never even heard of, and that’s what makes the topic interesting.
So on this Flashback Friday, we want your feedback. We want to hear where you would race if given the opportunity to visit a time many decades ago and traverse the quarter mile of blacktop at any track of your choosing. Perhaps there’s a track from your childhood that closed before you ever had a drivers license. Maybe you grew up and cut your teeth somewhere. Or you may live clear across the country and weren’t even born until the 80’s but would give an arm and leg to spend a day at Lions. Drop us a line or leave a comment, we want to hear your take.
