The return of the Ford GT is the return of a legend, and the Blue Oval has given its 600 horsepower carbon fiber supercar the royal treatment from day one. Developed at a secret skunkworks lab and boasting one of the most powerful production V6 engines ever and a suspension worthy of any race track, the new Ford GT is a conglomeration of all the performance technology that Henry’s house has to offer.
We’ve already made peace with the fact that the 2017 Ford GT will also be much more expensive than the cars that came before it, undoubtedly leading to a limited production run. Just how limited we didn’t know, though a post on reddit from somebody claiming to be a Ford salesperson says that global GT sales will be just 250 units, with priority given to current Ford GT owners.
Posting using the moniker “3031983” (rather innocuous as far as reddit usernames go), this unconfirmed report supposedly comes from an internal dealer website. The post says that the Ford GT ordering process will be unique when it opens in early 2016, and potential buyers have to fill out an application form, with a personalized buying experience for every customer.
Ford is also probably hoping to avoid “squatters” who buy a car like the Ford GT, only to turn around and flip it to the highest bidder. Instead, Ford wants these cars to go to true fans, with Ford GT owners who bought the last rendition getting top priority. Interestingly enough, customers will start the application with Ford itself, but will complete the transaction through a certified dealership, avoiding the issue if price gouging that plagued the Ford GT last time around. Further down in the comments, our anonymous tipster also reveals that global production will be halted at 250 units.
Most of these should end up in U.S. hands, but a few will no doubt be slated for Europe and Asia as well. Ford still isn’t talking pricing, but rumors continue to indicate a price well into the six-figures. But having the cash isn’t the only prerequisite to buying the new Ford GT, you have to be a proven fan.
Frankly, that’s the way it should be if you ask us.
