The Dodge Challenger Hellcat has warped our perceptions about how much horsepower a muscle car can make, turning gasoline into 707 horsepower, the most of any American production car ever. But it isn’t going to go unchallenged, and Ford has joined forces with former Mopar frontman Richard Petty to produce a Hellcat-challenging Mustang rightly dubbed the King Edition.
Capable of producing up with 727 horsepower and offered in extremely limited numbers, the 2016 Mustang GT King Edition comes in three flavors, all backed by a three-year/36,000 mile warranty from Ford.
“I’ve always liked the look of the Mustang, and the 2016 model gives us a great base car to work with,” said Richard Petty. “These new King edition Mustangs are pretty much the way I’d build my own. They are great fun to drive, and have a signature exhaust.
In total there will be just 300 King Edition Mustang GT’s built, 243 being the “base” King edition coupes, with 43 King Premier coupes, and 14 King Premier convertibles. The standard King Edition comes with a Ford Performance supercharger that adds 235 horsepower on top of the Mustang GT’s base 435, for a total of 670 ponies. All King Mustang GTs also get a Magnaflow exhaust, cold-air intake, and special engine calibration.
To help handle the extra power are extreme-duty TrakPak Ford Performance halfshafts, three-way adjustable front and rear sway bars, and a rear axle upgrade. Staggered 20- x 9-inch front wheels and 20- x 10-inch rear wheels from Petty’s Garage/HRE come wrapped with Continental Extreme Performance summer tires. The King Premier Editions come with all that, plus a big brake upgrade kit with six-piston front brakes and four-piston rears over two-piece rotors, along with a custom leather interior. Customers can also choose a few other upgrades, including wheel bushings to minimize wheel hop, a coil-over racing suspension and a supercharger upgrade that results in a total of 727 horsepower.
Pricing starts at $67,495 for the King edition, and $90,495 for King Premier. Is this a worthy rival to the Dodge Challenger Hellcat?
