Nearly every famous custom car from pop culture was touched by the hand of famed designer George Barris. Few people could match the creativity or skill of Barris, who designed and built vehicles that would go on to become international icons. His work has been featured in just about every magazine, and he customized vehicles for some of the biggest stars of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
But by far Barris will best be remembered for the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept that would become Adam West’s Batmobile. While many copies were built, Barris always held on to the original one…until now. Carscoop confirmed with the Barrett-Jackson auction house that the original Futura-based Barris Batmobile will be up for grabs at its January auction. Get ready to open those wallets nice and wide.
Barris was commissioned to build a Batmobile for the upcoming Batman television series with just three weeks to put together a car. Barris bought the Futura concept from Ford (which had reportedly spent $250,000 building it) and in three weeks, at a cost of around $30K, he had created the Batmobile we all know and love.
Barris maintained ownership of the Batmobile, leasing it to Fox and building several replicas for the show. These original replicas have fetched more than $200,000 at auction, though the original Batmobile has an estimated worth of around $2 million. With George Barris so intimately attached to the vehicle, we wouldn’t be surprised if bidding went far beyond that.
Look for the original Batmobile to cross the auction block in January in Scottsdale, Arizona.
